The Daily Five

Our Literacy Program

In Second Grade students are growing each day in reading! They are working towards becoming independent, confident readers! At Durant we use a program called the Daily 5. The program includes 5 activities for the children to choose from daily.

1. Read to Self - Students read independently for 20 minutes each day. As they learn how to pick good fit books students become more interested in reading for pleasure and for information.

2. Read to Someone - Students read books with a buddy helping improve fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Of course it's always fun to hang out with a friend and share a good book!

3. Listen to Reading - Research shows that listening to fluent (reading that is at an appropriate pace and uses expression) helps students become better readers themselves. We listen to reading at our listening center with books on CD and also on our classroom computers on many cool websites.

4. Word Work - Students use manipulatives such as magnetic letters, stamps, and letter tiles to practice spelling words and to learn new phonics patterns.

5. Work on Writing - Students have many choices for Work on Writing - sticker story, picture prompt, writing a friendly letter or just free writing. The students are becoming authors each day as they work on their writing.
